In the short story Within a Wall, Winnie is the five year old daughter of Isobel Loring and Alan Everard. She is the goddaughter of Jane Haworth. Jane is said to be fond of Winnie, and periodically comes over to see or and, on one occasion, takes her to the seaside so that the parents can have a holiday to Scotland on their own. Winnie is also the one who poses Alan a riddle which gives the title to the story: "Within a wall as white as milk, within a curtain soft as silk, bathed in a sea of crystal clear, a golden apple doth appear.”
