In the novel Evil Under the Sun, William is the gardener at the Jolly Roger Hotel. Among his tasks are keeping the paths in good condition and marking the tennis courts. He usually kept an eye out for rowing boats from Leathercombe Bay.

In the ITV 2001 adaptation, there is also a hotel staff member named William portrayed by Paul Ready. Here he is not a gardener but a bellhop. He shows Poirot and Hastings to their rooms and explains the amenities of the hotel to them.
