In the short story Swan Song, Vera Read is the secretary of the famous opera singer Paula Nazorkoff. She appears briefly at the beginning of the story when Madame Nazorkoff's agent Mr Cowan arrives for a meeting and Vera tells him that her employer is still asleep.
Vera Read is described as a pale girl with an efficient manner.
