In the novel Absent in the Spring, Tony Scudamore is the son and eldest child of Rodney and Joan Scudamore. Joan wanted him to be a lawyer and join his father's firm, but Tony like his father, harboured dreams of going to agricultural college and becoming a farmer. He refused to take up law and ended up working an orange plantation in Rhodesia and married to a girl from Durban.
