In the novel Dead Man's Folly, the Three Dogs is the favorite pub of Old Merdell. It is located in Gitcham across the river Helm from the Nasse House estate. Old Merdell would frequently go over to the pub by boat. After Old Merdell was found drowned, Alfred Tucker speculated that his father-in-law must have been returning from the pub in his ferry boat. Being slightly drunk, he probably lost his footing while stepping onto the quay and fell into the river and drowned himself.
