In the novel Dumb Witness, Thomas Arundell was the brother of Emily Arundell, and the father of Charles and Theresa.

According to Miss Peabody, Thomas was a "bit of an old woman", and was "a quiet, timid, retiring man and devoted to his sisters". People were very surprised that he married at all, being brought up in a home full of women. They were even more surprised that he chose to marry Mrs Varley, a woman put on trial for poisoning her first husband.

Thomas' marriage was a great shock to his sisters, and they would not receive his wife. This offended Thomas, and he went to live in the Channel Islands. His wife later passed away, and he survived her by three years.
