In the novel By the Pricking of My Thumbs, the Warrender family once was a prominent family in Sutton Chancellor. They lived at the Priory (also known as Warrender House). There had been Warrenders living in Sutton Chancellor almost since the reign of king James VI and I. The names of several family members are inscribed in the church in Sutton Cancellor and on tombstones in the graveyard. Helen Warrender had been the last Warrender.
