In the novel The Sittaford Mystery, The Three Crowns is an inn/public house in Exhampton. Mrs J. Belling is the licensed proprietor. Among her employees was a chambermaid Amy.

During the course of the events in the book, the following people were guests at the inn at one time or another:

  • Major Burnaby - he had come down from Sittaford to visit his friend Captain Trevelyan and had to stay on because the weather was too bad and the road was closed.
  • Mr Moseby
  • Mr Jones - both Jones and Moseby were described by Mrs Belling as commercial gentlemen.
  • Charles Enderby - a journalist, he arrived by the last train and checked into the inn. His purpose was to deliver a cheque to Major Burnaby after he won a newspaper contest.
  • James Pearson - a young man from London. Mrs Belling was not sure what he was doing in Exhampton. Even more suspicious, he left by the first train the morning after Captain Trevelyan had been found dead.
  • Emily Trefusis - She stayed only a short time before moving up to Sittaford and lodging there.
