In the short story The Adventure of 'The Western Star', “the Star of the East” is a well known diamond owned by Lady Yardly. According to speculation by the Society Gossip newspaper which Poirot quotes, the diamond is supposedly brought back from China by an ancestor of the present Lord Yardly. The stone is thought to be the right eye of a temple god, while another diamond, of the same size and shape, is the left eye and later became known as the Western Star. What happens to the two diamonds forms the main plot of the story.
