In the novel A Murder is Announced, Miss Marple mentions The Larches. This is the home of Major Vaughan in St. Mary Mead. Miss Marple mentioned this in a conversation with Diana Harmon when they were discussing village parallels of the people in Chipping Cleghorn. The topic had got on to whether St. Mary Mead had retired Anglo-Indian officers as a parallel of Colonel Easterbrook.

In the short story The Idol House of Astarte, there is also a house in St. Mary Mead named the Larches. Since the short story was published more than thirty years before the novel it is unlikely that Christie intended that the two houses should be the same house.
