In the novel Why Didn't They Ask Evans?, The Grange is one of two larger houses near the village of Staverley. An American doctor Dr Nicholson bought it over and converted it into a sanatorium. According to Thomas Askew, landlord of Anglers' Arms, there were "queer goings on" at the grange and "the moanings and the shrieks and the groans that go on there you wouldn’t believe." He believed there were people there against their will who were put away by their relatives.

Bobby Jones, exploring the place, knew that the sanatorium was a place for curing drug addicts and here some moaning and screaming was only to be expected.
