The Bodley Head is an English publishing house, founded in 1887 by John Lane and Elkin Mathews. The firm was originally traders in antiquarian books, but from 1894 they began to publish books. John Lane's nephew Allen inherited control of the company in 1925. In 1935 Allen and his brothers started Penguin Books, as an imprint of the main firm. Allen Lane left the company in 1936 and Penguin Books became a separate company.
The Bodley Head published the UK editions of the first five of Agatha Christie's novels.
