The ABC Murders is a British drama thriller miniseries set to premiere on BBC One on Christmas. The three-part programme is written by Sarah Phelps and is based on Agatha Christie's novel of the same name.
Synopsis[]
Set in the 1930s, a time when Britain is dangerously divided and suspicion and hatred are on the rise, the story sees Poirot face a serial killer known only as A.B.C. As the body count rises, the only clue is a copy of The ABC Railway Guide at each crime scene. Poirot's investigations are continuously thwarted by an enemy determined to outsmart him. If Poirot is to match his nemesis, then everything about him will be called into question: his authority, his integrity, his past and his identity. [1]
Comparison with the original novel[]
The role of several characters is changed and some characters are omitted.
- In this adaptation Hastings does not appear. His role is largely taken by Inpsector Crome who im this version is much less sympathetic to Poirot, even less than in the original novel.
- Here Charlotte Clarke, which is renamed Lady Hermione Clarke, fires Thora before her husband's death and not after.
- There is also no Mary Drower as a plausible suspect and most of the people visited by Poirot in Andover are not featured. Here the only person related to the first victim is her husband who is incarcerated and let go only at the end.
- The intended fourth victim is named Dexter Dooley and not Mr Downes in this adaptation. The background is also changed and George Earsfield is not cast. Unique to this adaptation there is a fifth victim which has the initial "E".

This one-off three-part drama marks the return of Poirot to television and continues BBC One and Agatha Christie Limited’s unique production deal that will see Agatha Christie Limited and Mammoth Screen deliver six more Christie adaptations. The next instalment in the collection of Agatha Christie stories commissioned by BBC One will be a Sarah Phelps adaptation of The ABC Murders, Christie’s classic 1936 title.
Due to start filming in June, John Malkovich (Being John Malkovich, In The Line Of Fire, Dangerous Liaisons) will lead the cast as Hercule Poirot.

Filming for The ABC Murders began June 2018,and is directed by Alex Gabassi (The Frankenstein Chronicles, El Hipnotizador) and produced by BAFTA nominated Farah Abushwesha (Irreplaceable You, The Party).
