In the novel They Came to Baghdad, Tell Aswad is an archaeological dig about one hundred and twenty miles from Baghdad. It is the site of the ancient city of Murik. The dig is supervised by the eminent archaelogist Dr Pauncefoot Jones. Near the beginning of the novel, Victoria Jones reads in a newspaper that Dr Pauncefoot Jones is just about to begin excavations at the tell. Richard Baker, another archaeologist, is also on his way to join the dig at the beginning of the novel.
