In the novel Sleeping Murder, Taylor is the leading workman employed by the builder and decorator Mr Sims, who was engaged by Gwenda Reed to undertake the renovations at Hillside. Taylor discovered that there had been an old doorway at the exact spot where Gwenda wanted a door between the dining and drawing rooms. Someone in the past had plastered up and closed off the doorway. Taylor also helped free a cupboard door which had been painted over. Gwenda found that the inside had been done up in wallpaper of a design that uncannily matched exactly the kind of wallpaper she had in mind for the rest of the room.

Taylor is not featured in BBC 1987 adaptation of the novel. Some of his lines are given to Mr Sims. Gwenda also mentions "Reg", who is a mason working for Mr Sims but he does not appear onscreen.
