In the short story The Herb of Death, Sylvia Keene was the ward of Sir Ambrose Bercy. She lived with her guardian at his estate Clodderham Court and was engaged to a neighbour Jerry Lorimer. During a houseparty at Clodderham Court, everyone fell ill after eating foxglove leaves mixed with sage in the stuffing of a duck. However, shortly thereafter, Sylvia died, the only one to do so.

Solving the mystery of her death became a challenge set by Dolly Bantry to the Tuesday Night Club.
