In the novel The Mysterious Affair at Styles, Superintendent Summerhaye is a senior officer at Scotland Yard. He and Inspector Japp had come up to Styles St. Mary to investigate the murder of Emily Inglethorp. He and Japp first meet Hercule Poirot at the inquest held at the Stylites Arms. Although the case against Alfred Inglethorp seems clear cut, Poirot tells Summerhaye that Inglethorp must not be arrested. Summerhaye is sceptical but Japp reassures the superintendent that Poirot can be relied upon.
Summerhaye is also present later at the denouement.
