Superintendent Albert “Bert” Spence is a police officer, working with Hercule Poirot. He has a sister called Elspeth McKay who lives in Woodleigh Common. Spence moves there to live with her after his retirement. In Mrs McGinty's Dead, he mentions he should have retired eighteen months before the events of the novel, but he was asked not to.
