In the novel The Sittaford Mystery, Superintendent Maxwell is the chief of Inspector Narracott. At the beginning of the case, he told Narracott that he anticipates it will be a big case and that there would be headlines in the papers. They therefore need to be careful and not make mistakes. He agrees with the inspector that interviewing James Pearson is a priority since that fact that he left Exhampton by the first train in the morning seems suspicious.
