In the short story The Adventure of the Cheap Flat, Stella Robinson was the wife of John Robinson. In the story, they had managed to rent a flat at Montagu Mansions for 80 pounds a year. This flat was in the fashionable Knightsbridge area where the rent should usually be in the order of several hundreds of pounds. What neither she or her husband knew was that they had been chosen due to their surname Robinson and that the landlady, Elsa Hardt, wanted to use them as decoy for an assassin to be killed in her and her accomplish's place.

Hastings described Stella as "tall and fair", with hair "a beautiful shade of auburn" and blue eyes. This led Poirot to chide him for never being able to see beyond the auburn hair.
