In the short story The Shadow on the Glass, Stanley and his wife were once house guests at Greenway's House. They who occupied the room by the west wall. This room had a window which had a certain pane of glass in the window with an irregular stain which from far away gives the effect of a man's face looking out. According to Mr Satterthwaite, this room had the reputation of bringing bad luck. Shortly after staying in the room, Stanley ran off with a chorus girl.
