In the novel Mrs McGinty's Dead, Stanisdale was the district judge presiding at the trial which found James Bentley guilty of the murder of Abigail McGinty. Superintendent Spence considered that Stanisdale had been scrupulously fair and unbiased. Despite this, Spence believed that Bentley might not have committed the crime.

In the 2008 ITV TV adaptation of the novel, a disrict judge appears and has the same role but is unnamed. His part was played by Simon Molloy.
