In the short story The Augean Stables, Sir George Conway is the Home Secretary in the cabinet of Edward Ferrier. He likened the task of cleaning up the mess and scandal left by the former Prime Minister John Hammett to clearing the Augean Stables. Poirot, who had been uninterested in the case until then, warmed to this phrase. He began to see it as a suitable candidate for his portfolio of twelve cases which would form his "labours of Hercules".
