In the short story The Idol House of Astarte, Silent Grove is a house on the outskirts of Dartmoor in Devon. The house was recently bought by Sir Richard Haydon. According to Dr Pender, who was a guest at a house party there at one time, the house itself was unremarkable, but solidly built of Devonshire granite, "unromantic but very comfortable". The location had, however, magnificent views, with tors and barrows on various hills nearby. More interesting was the fact that in the grounds of the house was a densely planted grove of trees, the original "Silent Grove" from which the house takes its name.
