In the short story Ingots of Gold, Serpent Rocks is an area of dangerous seas located near the village of Polperran on the west Cornish coast. Many ships were believed to have sunk in the area, including a Spanish galleon named the Juan Fernandez and, more recently, just six months before the events narrated, the Otranto.
