In the novel The Pale Horse, Sergeant Pine is one of the police officers assisting Inspector Lejeune. He interviewed Mrs Gerahty after the murder Father Gorman. It must have been Pine who commented to Lejuene that Mrs Gerahty is "a bit of a slattern". Apparently she did not keep Father Gorman's clothes properly mended, and that explained why he had slipped a piece of paper in his shoe and not in his pocket.
