In the short story Sanctuary, Sergeant Hayes is a police sergeant investigating the death of the man found in the church in Chipping Cleghorn.
Sergeant Hayes comes to the vicarage to interview Diana Harmon, who had found the man. She gives him the things from the man's coat pockets, to take back to the station.
Sergeant Hayes tells Diana that Mr and Mrs Eccles had telephoned the police station, saying that the man was Mrs Eccles' brother. He informs her that Mr and Mrs Eccles will probably call on her.
