Saunders was a non-canonical character who was created for the television adaptation of the short story The Jewel Robbery at the Grand Metropolitan in Series 5 of ITV's Agatha Christie's Poirot. Saunders was the chauffeur of Ed Opalsen. He was also secretly married to Grace Wilson, a former barmaid who had taken on a job as a chambermaid at the Grand Metropolitan hotel.
Saunders conspired with his wife to rob his employers of a precious pearl necklace. For this plan he disguised himself as an American tourist named "Worthing" and took a hotel room next door to that of the Opalsens.
Saunders was played by Karl Johnson. This character does not occur in the the original story. There, the persons who did the robbery were the valet and the chambermaid, both of whom were not named but who belonged to a ring of jewel thieves wanted by Scotland Yard.
