In the novel They Came to Baghdad, Salah Hassan is an operative of British intelligence in Basrah. He delivered a coded message to Dakin in Baghdad telling him that Henry Carmichael was on the way.

Salah Hassan ran a shop in Basrah selling ferwahs. The shop was to function as a safehouse for Carmichael but Hassan was poisoned and someone resembling him took his place, having somehow learnt all the passwords. When receiving Carmichael, he was able to exchange all the correct passwords with him. Carmichael noticed that he looked a little different. He claimed to be Hassan's brother but was in reality an enemy agent who was planning to kill Carmichael.
