Rose is the parlourmaid of Colonel Protheroe at Old Hall during the events at The Murder at the Vicarage. She is a pretty girl, and is about twenty-five years old.
After the murder of Colonel Protheroe, Lawrence Redding asks her if she has overheard anything that might help him discover the identity of the murderer. She tells him that Gladys, the kitchen maid, had overheard some of the conversation between Mrs Lestrange and Colonel Protheroe, on the evening before the murder.
She does not appear as a named character in either the BBC 1986 film adaptation of the novel or the ITV 2004 adaptation. Towards the end of the 1986 adaptation, a parlourmaid is seen making a call, probably to notify the police that Anne Protheroe had taken her own life. The actress does not have a speaking part and is not credited. In the 2004 adaptation, a maid answers the telephone at Old Hall. She is not named but the actress who played her is credited as Jenny Howe.
"Rose" is one of Christie's favoured names for domestic staff. This is the earliest example but there would be some seven characters of this name in her works.
