In the novel 4.50 from Paddington, Ronnie Wells is mentioned as being the son of Mr Wells, the solicitor in St. Mary Mead. He could not settle in well when he went into his father's business, so he travelled to East Africa to start a business involving cargo boats. For a while he had boats on either Lake Victoria or Lake Albert. Unfortunately the business failed, and he lost his money. He was engaged to a very sensible girl, who had tried to dissuade him, but he would not listen to her.

Miss Marple mentions Ronnie Wells because Bryan Eastley reminds her of him.
