In the novel A Murder is Announced, the late Reverend Hopkinson was a clergyman and probably the former vicar of Chipping Cleghorn. Julia, a waitress at the Blue Bird Tea Room and Café overhead Mrs Harmon, the present vicar's wife, saying, "Julia, pretty Julia is peculiar....". She protested to Mrs Harmon that she had never been "peculiar". She had always been a good member of the Church of England, something which the late Reverend Hopkinson well knew.
