In the short story The Incredible Theft, Reggie Carrington was the son of Air Marshal Sir George Carrington and his wife Julia. Reggie was twenty one and somewhat of a wastrel who had run up large debts (although what he spent his money on was not stated). His mother considered him naive and too trusting. During the house party, for example, he fell easily for the compliments paid to him by Mrs Vanderlyn. For this reason, Julia believed that Reggie could have been talked into helping to steal the plans for Mrs Vanderlyn. Although Reggie had claimed he was in his room the whole night, his mother knew it was not true. She had gone to his room and found him absent. She did not know that he was attempting to chat up Leonie, Mrs Vanderlyn's French maid.

Reggie Carrington also appears in the film adaptation of the story as episode 8 of Series 1 of ITV's Agatha Christie's Poirot drama series. In the film, Reggie is played by Guy Scantlebury. Here his characterization is different. He is young and defiant of authority. He constantly criticizes Mayfield's position as an arms manufacturer and makes snide remarks about his past scandal involving alleged sales of arms to Japan.
