In the novel The Sittaford Mystery, Mrs Rebecca Evans is the wife of Evans, the manservant of Captain Trevelyan. They were married just about two months before the events in the book. According to Evans, Rebecca is a good cook and he hoped Trevelyan would take her on and she and Evans could serve him together. However the Captain told him that he disliked women servants.

Evans says Rebecca is the daughter of Mrs J. Belling, proprietor of the The Three Crowns at Exhampton. Elsewhere in the text she is referred to as Mrs Belling's niece, including by Mrs Belling herself. Late in the story, Mrs Belling wrote to Emily Trefusis. Rebecca had told her about something peculiar which her husband had seen at Hazelmoor. A pair of snow boots which he had earlier noticed in the house had gone missing.
