In the novel One, Two, Buckle My Shoe, Ram Lal is an Indian student. He shot at the Prime Minister and Alistair Blunt as they were walking out of 10 Downing Street. He missed and was trying to get away but the police on duty at the location managed to arrest him.
Howard Raikes told Poirot that he knew Ram Lal and liked him. He felt sympathetic to Ram Lal who was "excitable" and felt "the wrongs of India very keenly". Raikes happened to be at Downing Street and saw what happened. He did not want to see Ram Lal getting arrested, and so he grabbed a random person next to him and shouted to the police that he had taken hold of the gunman, hoping that by distracting the police, Ram Lal could get away. But in the end the police managed to arrest Ram Lal anyway.
Ram Lal does not occur in ITV's 1992 adaptation of the novel.
