In the novel Destination Unknown, Professor Mannheim was a nuclear scientist who escaped from Germany at the start of World War II. He settled in America where he was put to work on nuclear physics research. Thomas Betterton was assigned to work as his assistant. Through this assignment, Betterton met Mannheim's daughter Elsa, also a nuclear scientist, and subsequently married her. Mannheim's nationality is not clear. His name and the fact that he escaped from Germany might suggest that he is German. On the other hand, he has a nephew Boris Glydr who is the son of his only sister and who is Polish.
