In the novel Dumb Witness, Professor Biggs was the husband of Arabella Arundell, and the father of Bella Tanios. He taught chemistry at Cambridge University. He was much older than his wife.

According to Miss Peabody, Professor Biggs had given a series of lectures in Market Basing, on the wonders of Modern Chemistry. Arabella attended the lectures, and stayed behind to ask questions. They later married, and had quite a happy marriage.

Miss Peabody describes Professor Biggs as being "sixty if he was a day". According to her, he had a beard, and mumbled when he spoke.
