Princess Pier in Torquay is one of several places of interest along the Agatha Christie Mile. The concrete pier serves as a breakwater protecting Torquay marina. Originally opened in 1894 by Princess Louise (a daughter of Queen Victoria), the pier was a popular entertainment venue during Agatha Christie's time. The young Agatha Christie would come here for roller skating with her friends the Lucy family. At the end of the pier was a large wooden structure known as the Concert Room. This hall was also open to roller skaters in the winter months. The Concert Room later became an events space and restaurant but was burnt down in a fire in 1974 and not rebuilt. Princess Pier has been closed for repairs on several occasions and then reopened. Today the location is popular with anglers and it is possible to board pleasure boats from the pier to various destinations including Greenway. Ironically, roller-skating is specifically disallowed now.[1]
