Eric Caruso as Philippe Sarrazin

Eric Caruso as Philippe Sarrazin

In Pourquoi pas Martin?, the France Télévisions adaptation of Why Didn't They Ask Evans?Doctor Philippe Sarrazin the parallel of Dr Nicholson in the original novel. Philippe is a psychiatrist who is the owner of the Clinique Du Bois outside Lille near the chateau of André Delavallée. Philippe Sarrazin is portrayed by Eric Caruso.

Like Nicholson in the original, Sarrazin's clinic handles, among other cases, the detoxification of drug addicts. His wife Alma, like Moira Nicholson uses the clinic to cover a drug smuggling network. Like Nicholson, Sarrazin makes the same remarks concerning the discrepancies in the way Alice Avril's fake car crash was staged and how her "rescuer's" car made a u-turn before stopping to help. He had heard about the accident and had description from a delivery boy just like in the original.

In this adaptation, André Delavallée is also a drug addict like Henry Bassington-ffrench. However here he is not murdered. Sarrazin has him admitted to his clinic as a patient to help treat him. Commissaire Laurence surmises that, as part of his plot to gain control of the Delavallée fortune, Roland Delavallée, André's brother, probably planned to kill him later and then frame Sarrazin for it. Part of the groundwork for this is laid in the same way as in the original novel--Alma Sarrazin encounters Laurence in the woods in circumstances similar to that between Bobby Jones and Moira. She told Laurence how she believed Sarrazin was trying to kill her.

One additional role played by Sarrazin that is unique to this adaptation is how he manages to revive Frédéric Delavallée after he was almost drowned in his bathtub by Roland Delavallée.
