Agatha Christie Wiki

The PS Sudan (sometimes called SS Sudan) is a side-wheel paddle steamer. In 1933, Agatha Christie took a voyage on the ship up the Nile. She most probably based her S. S. Karnak from Death on the Nile and the Lotus from Murder on the Nile on this boat.

The Sudan was originally built for King Fouad in 1885. In 1911, Thomas Cook acquired the boat for Nile cruises. This continued until World War II where the decline in tourism resulted in the boat being laid up. In 2000, the boat was bought over by a French company which restored it and the Sudan, after refurbishment, began offering Nile cruises again in 2006. Just prior to that, in 2004, the Sudan was used as the filming location of the ITV adaptation Death on the Nile.[1]

The 2022 Kenneth Branagh adaptation of Death on the Nile did not use the Sudan. Instead, an entire paddle steamer set was custom built for filming.[2]
