In the novel They Came to Baghdad, Otto Morganthal is the head of Morganthal, Brown and Shipperke, a firm of international bankers based in New York. In the course of his work, he relied heavily on his secretary Anna Scheele. He also consulted Anna on personal matters and had given him good advice on the matter of divorcing his first wife. At the same time, Anna's association with Morganthal opened doors for her everywhere. When she took leave and travelled to London to visit her sister, she found that everywhere she went, she was welcomed with open arms by hoteliers and restauranteurs who all asked about Mr Morganthal.
