In the short story Ingots of Gold, the Otranto is a ship that went down near Serpent Rocks off the Cornish coast some six months before the events in the story narrated by Raymond West. The ship carried a load of gold bars. When salvage divers went into the wreck, they found that the strong room was empty. Inspector Badgworth from Scotland Yard came down from London to investigate this strange occurence. He believed that the gold was probably stolen from ship after it sank since the rocks had torn a hole into the strong room. As gold bullion was heavy to move, he believed the gold would be hidden nearby.
