In the novel Dead Man's Folly, “Old Squire” Folliat was the father of Major Folliat, the late husband of Amy Folliat. Old Merdell told Hercule Poirot that he used to work for Squire Folliat looking after his boats. Old Squire Folliat was "fair mazed about boats" and used to sail in all weathers.
