In the short story The Kidnapped Prime Minister, O'Murphy was a C.I.D. man who was assigned as the Prime Minister's driver. An Irishman from County Clare, O'Murphy was driving the Prime Minister from Windsor to London when they were stopped at a roadblock. He charged the car at them, forcing the assailants to scatter, thereby saving the life of the Prime Minister. However after dropping the Prime Minister off at Charing Cross, he disappeared. The car was later found outside a restaurant in Soho known to be a meeting place of German agents. O'Murphy became a suspect after the Prime Minister disappeared. Poirot later discovered that he was innocent. He had also been kidnapped and held a prisoner together with the Prime Minister at the house of Mrs Everard.

O'Murphy is not featured in the film adaptation of The Kidnapped Prime Minister in Series 2 of ITV's Agatha Christie's Poirot. Here his role was taken over by another character Egan.
In the NHK anime adaptation The Disappearance of the Prime Minister, O'Murply's portrayal is similar to that in the original novel. It is not stated explicitly that he is a C.I.D. man. Lord Estair does express some suspicions about him but it is later shown that he is innocent and he was locked up with the Prime Minister. His jacket had been taken and planted in a wooden cabin in France to mislead the British troops searching for the Prime Minister. The voice actor behind the character of O'Murphy in this adaptation is not credited.
