In the novel Murder is Easy, Nelly is one of three bulldogs owned by Major Horton and the only female one among them. Horton liked bulldogs above other breeds and praised Nelly and the prizes she had won. Nelly was also apparently the best behaved and friendliest of the three as she allowed Luke Fitzwilliam to pat her while "gazing up at him sentimentally".
