In the novel Giant's Bread, Nell Vereker is a childhood friend of Vernon Deyre and Joe Waite. She is a thin girl and can't keep up with Vernon and Joe.
Nell's mother wants her daughter to marry a wealthy man, and has her eyes set on George Chetwynd. In the end Nell marries the penniless Vernon, just at the beginning of the First World War.
