In the short story In a Glass Darkly, Neil Carslake is the brother of Alan and Sylvia. His family home is called Badgeworthy.
Neil is the best friend of the narrator of the story. They had been at school together, and twice Neil had invited the narrator to spend part of the holidays with him and his family at Badgeworthy. However, something intervened on both occasions, so the narrator was not able to visit Badgeworthy until the time of the events of the story.
Neil was killed in 1916, during the Great War, and the narrator had to tell Sylvia about his last moments.
