In the Harley Quin short story The World's End, Naomi Carlton Smith is an artist living on the island of Corsica. Mr Satterthwaite meets her when he accompanies The Duchess of Leith to the island and checks into the same hotel.
Naomi's mother was a member of the Knowlton family, and a first cousin of the Duchess. According to the Duchess, Naomi takes after the rest of the Carlton Smith family, "[p]oor as a church mouse, proud as Lucifer, and a bee in her bonnet". As an artist, Naomi specialises in abstract paintings which the Duchess does not recognise as art. Satterthwaite, however, spots real talent in her and buys one of her paintings for five guineas.
According to the Duchess, Naomi's finace Alec Gerard had just been convicted for the theft of an opal a year ago and had been thrown into prison about a year ago. This had hit Naomi very hard. The Duchess notices that Naomi is moping and "needs taking out of herself". She seems so "totally indifferent to everyone and everything," the Duchess says. Accordingly, the Duchess organises an excursion to see the sights and wants Naomi to come along. Satterthwaite thinks there is more to it. He has never met someone "so detached for life", and that, he observes, could be "dangerous". As a precaution, Satterthwaite chooses to go with Naomi in her two-seater car as they drive off. They finally reach the remote hill top village of Coti Chiaveeri, which Naomi calls, "The World's End". To Satterthwaite, it feels like the kind of place where "anything might happen". Fortunately, Harley Quin turns up, as always, in the nick of time.
