In the novel Postern of Fate, “Mutton-Chop” is the nickname of an old friend of Tommy Beresford. Like Tommy he is a former intelligence agent.
Tommy had intended to attend the marriage between “Mutton-Chop” and a woman named Margery, but somehow Tommy had missed it. The marriage only lasted a year and a half. Margery had remarried, but “Mutton-Chop” hadn't. Now he lives in Little Pollon with his widowed sister. He enjoys playing golf.
