Muizenberg is a coastal town in the Western Cape of South Africa near to the city of Cape Town. It is considered historically to be where surfing began in South Africa and continues to be the main surfing spot in Cape Town, home to numerous surfing schools and a surfing community, centered on the popular 'Surfer's Corner'.[1]

Agatha Christie and her husband Archie Christie arrived in Cape Town on 5 Feb 1922 while on their “Grand Tour” accompanying Major Ernest Belcher to promote the British Empire Exhibition. Over the course of the next few days, Agatha and Archie went to Muizenberg on several occasions to learn surfing (or "surf bathing" as she calls it in An Autobiography). She apparently enjoyed the experience very much and became quite proficient at it. At Muizenberg she surfed lying prone on the board. It was only later in Hawaii that she learnt to surf standing up.[2][3][4]
